Scar Therapy
Scar Therapy uses specialised massage and fascial techniques tailored to soften and reduce dysfunctional scar tissue, improve skin and fascial mobility, reducing pain and sensitivity for surgical scars following planned or emergency procedures.
Having trained in Sharon Wheeler's ScarWork methods, and with Restore, I utilise a combination of techniques to best support you.
Bold claims are often made about, for example, breaking up and removing adhesions. However, there is currently no evidence to support such claims about massage and scars. What manual scar therapy can do is help stimulate your scar and the underlying tissue. Treatment can help reduce symptoms related to your surgery or injury, for example:
- pain, sensitivity or numbness
- limited movement or tightness
- pulling or puckering
- fibrous scar tissue or scar adhesions
Massage can be enjoyed relatively soon after surgery however I am trained to begin direct Scar Therapy 8 weeks post surgery/injury, once the wound has fully healed.
Treatment frequency depends on each individual and I aim to support you in feeling comfortable with your scar and to minimise any negative impacts of the scar.
Sessions may involve working elsewhere in the body as we seek to address altered patterns of structure and movement and to assimilate the scar with the whole body.
Positive results can occur even many years after the initial scar occurrence and it need not require numerous sessions to feel the impact.
I am happy to have a conversation about whether Scar Therapy is an appropriate approach for you so do get in touch.
